Em comemoração aos 40 anos da banda a coletânea abrange a sua história. Forty Licks é notável por ser a primeira retrospectiva a combinar a formação da época da Decca / Londres era da década de 1960, agora licenciados pela ABKCO Records (no disco um), com o seu material pós-1970, distribuída na época pela Virgin / EMI, mas agora distribuído pela própria distribuidora da ABKCO Universal Music Group. Quatro novas canções foram incluídas no segundo disco e em simultâneo ao lançamento do álbum, os Stones embarcaram na bem-sucedida tounee “Internacional Licks Tour”, que durou um ano, e que resultou no Live Licks em 2004.
